When the oxygen (O2) sensor goes bad, it produces an error code. This error code is sent to your automobile’s main computer chip, which is called the engine control unit (ECU) or engine control module (ECM). The ECU cannot fix a faulty O2 sensor, so it will turn on the check engine light to alert you of a problem. Collins Auto Care can determine what the problem is by completing a diagnostic check on your automobile. Aside from a check warning, here are other signs of a bad O2 sensor.
Power Loss or Surging
Your engine will also lose power or surge because the ECU may attempt to correct the O2 sensor problem by making unnecessary adjustments in the combustion chamber. If it pushes extra air into the chamber, the engine will lose power. If it pushes extra fuel into the chamber, the engine will surge.
Reduced Fuel Economy
Unfortunately, either condition will cause a noticeable loss of fuel efficiency in your automobile. If the engine is struggling to produce power, it will burn through what fuel it has. If the engine has extra fuel, it will burn it. Either way, you will need to fill your tank more often to keep your car on the road.
Pungent Exhaust Odors
Assume for the moment that the ECU put too much fuel into the combustion chamber. When this happens, the chamber produces excess hydrocarbons in the exhaust. The combustion chamber can get clogged by these hydrocarbons and you will smell a pungent exhaust odor that is like rotten eggs.
Black Exhaust Smoke
Another sign that the catalytic converter is clogged because the ECU put too much fuel into the combustion chamber is black exhaust smoke exiting the tailpipe. The dark color of the exhaust points to an excess fuel burn in the engine and untreated exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe.
High Vehicle Emissions
Naturally, the higher the hydrocarbon level in your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s exhaust the higher the emissions released in the exhaust. This can push your vehicle’s emissions above the state-required limit if you live in a state that tests automobile emissions. Texas is one such state for some vehicles.
