Let’s Talk About the Signs That Your Car Needs a New Alternator

Bring your vehicle to Collins Auto Care right away if it is doing any of the things listed below. These things are signs that your alternator is going bad. This can happen at around 10 years or 100,000 miles to 150,000 miles. We can replace the alternator if it needs it.

Battery Warning Light

One of the first things that might happen is you may see a dashboard warning light illuminate on the dashboard. In the case of the alternator, it could be the battery light or the ALT light if your car is equipped with one.

Burning Electricity Odors

You may also smell burning electricity odors coming from the engine if the alternator is malfunctioning and producing power above 14.5 volts, which is the maximum amount of power an alternator should produce. The burning electricity odors may smell like burning wires or rubber.

Frequent Engine Stalling

Your engine may also stall frequently if the alternator is going bad and is unable to produce electricity for the spark plugs. The spark plugs rely on the alternator for their power. If they are not receiving power, they will be unable to fire and your engine will stall.

Hard Starts/Dead Battery

Hard starts related to a dying battery can be a sign that the alternator is going bad rather than the battery. In this case, if you are constantly having to jump-start your battery, it’s possible that the alternator is not able to keep it charged.
Malfunctioning Accessories
You might also have problems with your vehicle’s accessories. The alternator provides power to them, as well. Specific problems can include your power seats and windows slowing down, your radio turning off by itself, and your navigation system failing to work.

Odd Light Problems

Another sign that the alternator is dying is problems with your vehicle’s lights. For example, the lights may be dim and make it hard to see at night. They may also be too bright if the alternator is producing too much electricity.

Strange Engine Noises

Finally, you may hear strange noises coming from the engine. The alternator will make growling or grinding noises if its internal mechanisms are wearing down. The alternator belt may squeak, squeal, or whine if it is too loose.
