Collins Auto Care can run a diagnostic test to find out why your check engine light has turned on and will not turn off. One thing to note is if the CEL is flashing, you should pull over right away and turn off the engine. A flashing check engine light is the engine control unit notifying you that there are serious problems with the engine. The unit is your main computer chip and it operates the CEL.
Catalytic Converter
One thing that will generate the check engine warning is catalytic converter malfunction. Usually, the catalytic converter malfunctions when it is clogged. The hydrocarbons that it treats build up on its interior surface. Once the buildup is severe, the converter needs to be replaced.
EVAP Control System
The engine control unit may also turn on the check engine light if the EVAP control system is malfunctioning. This is the system in your automobile that prevents the diesel fuel or gasoline from evaporating. The fuel cap also prevents evaporation and can trigger a CEL warning if it’s loose.
Engine Control Unit
Ironically, the engine control unit will turn on the check engine light if it’s malfunctioning itself. Generally, it will also cut the engine and you won’t be able to get it started again. Unfortunately, this is a sign that you need to have a new engine control unit – main computer chip – installed.
Mass Airflow Sensor
Another thing that can cause the unit to turn on the CEL is a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor that is caked with dirt because it is located behind the air filter. You need a functional mass airflow sensor to determine how much air flows into the engine from the outside.
Oxygen Sensor
One of the most common reasons for a CEL warning is a malfunctioning oxygen sensor. This sensor is located in the tailpipe so it can determine how much oxygen is in the exhaust. Generally, this sensor will start to break down and malfunction after you’ve put 100,000 miles on the odometer.
Spark Plugs
Worn and misfiring spark plugs can also cause the engine control unit to turn on the check engine light. If you haven’t had your spark plugs replaced in years, it’s likely time to do so.
Transmission
Finally, a faulty transmission can also generate a check engine warning because the transmission is covered by this dashboard warning light. We can inspect your transmission and repair it.
