When Is it Better to Replace My Engine Than Repair It?

Collins Auto Care works tirelessly to make sure our customers get the longest life out of their vehicle’s engines as possible. There will come a time, however, when you need to have the engine replaced because it has reached the end of its life. We can tell you when that time comes. We are going to list five examples of occasions when it’s better to replace the engine than repair it.

Excessive Amounts of Exhaust

Excessive amounts of exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe can indicate that you’ve got automotive fluid hemorrhaging in the engine. This is caused by a serious breach. For example, you may have a blown head gasket and coolant spraying throughout the engine. When this happens, your vehicle releases white exhaust. Black exhaust is an indication of a serious fuel leak. Blue exhaust is an oil leak.

Extremely High Temperatures

Generally, if your automobile is overheating at extremely high temperatures all the time, you have serious engine damage underneath the hood. One thing that cannot be repaired is a cracked engine block. We will have to rebuild the engine or replace it to resolve this problem. You may also have a cracked exhaust manifold gasket or a cracked head gasket that is making the engine overheat.

Irreparable Power Loss

If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine can no longer generate power yet there is nothing wrong with it, the engine has definitely reached the end of its life. There will come a point when the engine simply runs out of steam, so to speak. This is the point at which the engine needs to be replaced because no amount of repair work will restore the engine’s power.

Loud Engine Knocking Sounds

Another sign of serious damage to your automobile’s engine is loud knocking noises while the engine is running. This is an indication that you have a problem between the pistons and cylinders in the cylinder block. Unfortunately, if the pistons are banging against the cylinder walls, they can cause serious damage to the cylinder block.

Metal Shavings in the Motor Oil

Finally, if your motor oil has turned gray because it is filled with metal shavings, your vehicle’s engine is disintegrating. Obviously, this is something that we cannot repair. The engine has reached the end of its life and it needs to be replaced.
